  1. I distribute data in a MetaStock format but now one of my securities won’t update in my third party charting software.

The most common reason for data not updating for a specific security is caused by downloading and distributing data while you have charts open. If you do this, you’ll convert the file for the charted security to a “read only” file. When you perform subsequent updates, the data can only update “read/write” files, so the “read only” files won’t update.

If you find you have gaps in either your HUBB or your MetaStock format database, there are a number of steps you can follow to repair the database.

The first step is to redistribute the data that you have downloaded. To do this, go to Tools and select Distribute Downloaded Data

If you are missing data for just today, you can choose to redistribute Today’s Downloaded Data. Similarly if you are missing data for today and yesterday you can select distribute Yesterday’s Downloaded Data.

If you are missing data for more than the last two days, you can choose to redistribute the entire database. This is all of the files that have ever been downloaded and can be a time consuming process. We suggest you set it up to run before you go to work or go to bed so that this process can run without interruption for a few hours.

Alternatively if you are only missing data for one or two securities, you can email sherpa@hubb.org. Include your login and the name of the security you are missing data for and we will rebuild the data and include it in your next data download.

Note: Want to find your login? Simply open the Sherpa software and click on View, then Options. Your login is on the Download tab. Including this information each time you email HUBB for support makes it faster and easier for the technical support team to find your details and provide you with a solution.

  2. What is Sherpa?
Sherpa is the revolutionary new all-in-one investment software developed by a respected and awarded industry practitioner. Sherpa uses Point & Click simplicity to run fundamental analysis, technical analysis and comprehensive scanning, ranking, sorting and filtering features on shares, futures, currencies, options and warrants.

Over 50 years of investment insights, charting tools and fundamental ratios are at your disposal as soon as you load Sherpa onto your PC.

Sherpa is your active investing guide. Sherpa can help you access the routes to wealth that have previously only been available to professional investors and traders.

  3. What does Sherpa do?
Sherpa allows you to track shares, futures, currencies, options and warrants. It enables you to draw simple or complex charts and apply technical analysis as well as analyse a company’s balance sheet, profit and loss statement and cash flow statement. Sherpa allows you to scan the entire market or just your own carefully selected watch lists for those companies or markets that are both fundamentally desirable and technically attractive. Sherpa can scan, rank, sort and filter markets and shares any way you like. Sherpa is visually clear and easy to use and no programming language needs to be learnt.

  4. Why is the software called Sherpa?
A Sherpa is a Himalayan trekking and climbing guide used by teams and individuals to help them summit the tallest mountains in the world. Without the expertise and experience of the Sherpa, many would not have been successful in reaching their goals. Every successful team has used Sherpas and very few, if any team would consider such a challenge without accessing their knowledge, wisdom, support and assistance.

When investing, a guide can make a seemingly insurmountable challenge effortless. Every investor needs a guide who knows what tools to use and when to use them. In the wrong circumstances, the wrong tools can lead to costly mistakes. Our Sherpa software carries all the tools that are necessary and some that are a luxury. Sherpa however does not carry tools or equipment that sound important but that, in the investment game, are of little practical use. Save yourself the time, frustration and effort by accessing the tools of Sherpa and confidently identify clever routes to wealth.

  1. I am not a computer expert; will I be able to use Sherpa?
Yes, Sherpa is designed for use by people with varying levels of experience in both investment and computer operation. The system is designed to be as easy as possible to use, with wizards to help you manage many of the tasks such as installing and setting up data for your new software package. Downloading is a simple one-touch operation with end of day data downloaded directly into the software each day, through your existing Internet connection.

  2. Is Sherpa easy to learn?
We designed it that way. After a few hours in front of your PC, Sherpa will make complete sense to you. There is also a help function that explains everything in a logical step by step fashion and the User Guide is extremely comprehensive, running you through what to use and why you might use it.  For the ultimate insight into what has worked and what hasn’t, Investor’s Advantage Pty Limited conducts the full day, fully catered Opening Bell course as part of its Insider Training series. This is the course that has been attended by the staff of the Australian Stock Exchange and the Sydney Futures Exchange as well as traders, dealers, brokers, financial planners and economists from a number of Australia’s pre-eminent investment banks and broking firms. 4. How will the software benefit me?
Whether you are a full time, part time or first time investor or trader, Sherpa can benefit you. Whether you lean more towards fundamental analysis or more towards charts, Sherpa does it all. Sherpa combines fundamental analysis with charting and technical analysis to help you build robust investing strategies and speculative trading systems. There is no limit to the number you can create with Sherpa. Found a list of stocks recommended in a newsletter or in the latest stockmarket magazine? Put them in a watch list and apply your own analysis using Sherpa to fine tune the selection, then apply simply charting filters. Out of those recommended stocks, scan them for unusual increases in volume or be alerted to a price break in any or all of them. Do any have an above average rate of earnings growth that might be considered extremely desirable by the market? Are any of them now starting to move up as indicated by a move to new short- term highs? Whatever you want to look for Sherpa will take you there.

  5. Am I guaranteed to make money?
No, what Sherpa provides is clear, concise information on the financial markets, coupled with a quality software package to analyse and identify market trends. With this information from a reliable source you can invest with greater security but the responsibility for making investment decisions always remains with you.

  6. What markets can I use Sherpa on?
Sherpa will allow you to track, analyse, trade and chart every company on the Australian Stock Exchange. For more advanced investors, Sherpa allows you to track and trade Options, Warrants, Global Futures including commodities such as Wheat, Pork Bellies, Corn, Coffee, Cocoa, Gold, Silver and Platinum and financials such as the NASDAQ, Dow Jones, US 30 year bonds, UK Gilt’s and German Bonds. Sherpa also allows you to identify patterns and signals in major Currencies such as the Australian Dollar and the Yen and minor cross rates as well.

  7. How long does it take to download information?
It takes most users less than 3 minutes to download and update their database. This is based on a 56K modem or better. Obviously this will vary depending on the actual information you have selected and the speed of your Internet connection.

  8. Do I need to be connected to the Internet all the time?
No, Sherpa only needs to connect to the HUBB Data Server to download information each day. Once downloaded this information is stored for later use. You can disconnect from the Internet and view the price data off-line. This has the benefit of reducing the time charged by your ISP for Internet use.

  9. How accurate is the information from HUBB?
All of our information is supplied from the relevant stock and futures exchanges. To provide greater accuracy our Server scans all information received for possible errors or odd prices. These are checked manually by our expert staff before being made available for download. This is important because information provided by many ISP’s and Brokers is done only to attract customers and therefore is not rigorously verified.

  10. When is data available for download?
Data is scheduled for release each day.
Australian Shares, Options and Warrants 6:30 PM AEST
Australian Futures (SFE) 6.30 PM AEST
    World Futures 10.30 AM AEST
    Foreign Exchange 12.00 PM AEST

  11. How much historical data is available?
Your Sherpa CD comes complete with historical data that includes information on current Australian futures, stocks, options and warrants back as far as 1981 and an assortment of world futures, commodity and currency futures in some cases as far back as 1959.

  12. What fundamental data is available?
For Australian companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, Sherpa provides comprehensive fundamental data that goes back up to ten years. Sherpa allows you to track an individual company’s latest data releases through the daily downloads, but perhaps even more powerful is its ability to apply ratio analysis to entire sectors or the whole market to identify those companies that best meet your criteria.

The fundamental data and fundamental scans can be set up any number of ways. For example you may only want to look at companies that have a dividend yield of 10% or higher. No problem. Sherpa will quickly find those companies that meet those criteria. Alternatively you may want to find the top ten dividend yielding stocks in the market, no matter what their actual yield is. Again Sherpa will go there too.

Sherpa will really start to impress you when you ask it to find companies that are the largest by market capitalisation, are the top twenty by dividend yield, have Return on Equity of over 20%, have growth earnings per share by 10% on average, every year over the last five years and have a Profit Margin of 25% or more. And if you want to rank those companies that meet all of the above criteria by dividend yield in ascending or descending order Sherpa is up to the challenge.

  13. Who supplies the fundamental information?
Sherpa derives its fundamental information direct from the ASX. The ASX supplies share price data, fundamental information and research to some of the world's largest data providers including Reuters, Bridge and Bloomberg and now Sherpa. When companies report their results to the ASX, this means you are first to receive information directly into your Sherpa software and you are assured accuracy, given that your data comes straight from the source.

  14. How do I access the fundamental data?
When you download your data, each day if you wish, the fundamental data is updated along with the price data. When a company announces new data as part of its latest profit report, that data is automatically made available to owners of Sherpa. There is no need to wait for a CD to be mailed to you with the latest data. You are updated when the market is updated.

  15. Once a company has reported its annual or interim results, how long will it take for this information to be available for downloading from HUBB?

HUBB makes this information available as soon as the ASX provides it to us. There is some time required to process these results by the ASX.  Priority is given to the top 200 companies, with a turnaround time of one to two business days.  For all other companies, the turnaround time is five business days.  These timeframes are for the peak reporting periods.  For most of the year, when there aren't a lot of companies reporting on the same day, the ASX will be able to provide the information to us within one business day, which we will then make available to our customers for downloading.

  16. What chart features are there?
For the private investor and the expert, everything you will need is available with Sherpa. Over 50 indicators are available, from simple moving averages and exponential moving averages to stochastics, trailing stops, Bollinger bands, RSI’s and the list goes on.

Overlay the price chart with a number of different indicators and then display more in the lower charts. Sherpa has the flexibility to expand its capabilities as you become more experienced and has all the indicators you need to design your own trading systems.

You can even make notes on price charts and save them for future reference or print them out with the text and trendlines all clearly visible and marking out important turning points and or potential support and resistance levels

  1. What types of charts are there?
Every major type of chart is covered. Bar charts are the most popular but Sherpa also has accurate Point & Figure charts (yes-X’s and zero’s can be in the same column), Line charts and even candlesticks. Use Sherpa to display price data any way you want.

  2. Is Sherpa’s charting only for experts?
Not at all! True we have included some advanced indicators in Sherpa, including Channel Breakouts and User Defined Average True Range Trailing Stops, which you won’t find in a lot of other software packages. But Sherpa is designed to grow with you. It’s easy for the novice or the aspiring investor to master in a few hours but its advanced features will keep you wanting to learn more. Sherpa will guide you all the way. Why spend hundreds of dollars or even thousands on software that in a few months needs to be replaced or upgraded because it doesn’t expand as you become more experienced?

Sherpa charts are visually appealing and most importantly, Sherpa charts are easy to use. Scroll back or forward one day at a time, or a year at a time or anything in between. Change from daily to weekly, monthly or even quarterly or yearly. Zoom in or zoom out. Show ten years of data on the one chart or just ten days. Change the colours, change the axis, even change the indicators - all with Sherpa’s point & click simplicity.

  3. Can I backtest with Sherpa?
More advanced traders may like to backtest the systems that they have designed. Sherpa allows you to set historical dates to run your scans and provides you with the signals given on that date. It’s then easy to see where your trades would have occurred in the past and check how those historical trades performed.

  4. Does Sherpa contain drawing tools?
Of course. Draw your own support and resistance lines, fibonacci retracement levels, parallel lines and even label your charts with your own text. Very handy if you want to mark a day as the one where much higher than expected profits were announced. Save thousands of charts with your notes attached for future reference.

    top of page

  5. I don’t like the default colours of the charts, can I change them?

Yes. Everything can be defined by you, the user. There is no limit to the way you can change the look and feel of the charts. We have used red bars to define the days, weeks, months, quarters or years that closed lower than they opened and green to define those that closed higher than they opened. If you don’t like this, change the bars to any colour you like. Change the background to white, green, blue, black or red or any shade in between. Change the colours of your favourite indicators and then save your changes.

  6. Do I need scanning?

Absolutely. If time is important to you then Sherpa will deliver where other investment software cannot. Suppose you have designed a technical trading method based on charts. You are looking for shares that have shown an unusual spike in volume in the last 90 days, have broken above their moving average, have an RSI above 50 and have just broken a previous 100 day high. With most software you would have to pull up 1200 charts and see if any companies meet this criteria. That could take all week. With Sherpa it’s a few minutes and a list of companies that meet all of your criteria is available. Quickly scan the market for opportunities before heading to work. Spend the rest of the day with friends, go shopping or fishing, relaxed in the knowledge that Sherpa has not missed any opportunities for you.

Suppose you have designed a charting method but wish to apply it to only those ten companies that meet all of your desirable fundamental criteria. This is really where Sherpa shines. Sherpa will scan just your top ten watch list. If your list is the top twenty, thirty, hundred or two hundred, it will just scan those. Sherpa can scan both fundamentals and technicals simultaneously.

  7. Who is behind Sherpa and what qualifications do they have?
Sherpa’s driving force is Roger J. Montgomery ASIA, B.Comm (Melb). Roger is a Melbourne University Graduate and an Associate member of the Securities Institute of Australia. Roger is a Registered Representative of the Sydney Futures Exchange and holds a Futures Adviser’s License with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission. He has also held both a Level 1 and Level 2 Derivatives Accreditation with the Australian Stock Exchange’s Derivatives Division. Roger is a former equities analyst, market strategist, technical analyst, trader and dealer for three of the world’s largest financial institutions. He is a twice awarded financial markets presenter and writes and presents courses and workshops for the Australian Stock Exchange, the Sydney Futures Exchange and the Securities Institute of Australia. His clients include both exchanges and the Securities Institute of Australia as well as a host of Australia’s most established financial institutions. He presents for both their staff and their clients. Roger has featured on the ABC’s Lateline program, Four Corners and Land Line as well as appearing as a market commentator on the Seven, Nine and Ten networks. He writes for the Daily Telegraph in Sydney and for Brisbane’s Courier Mail. Roger Montgomery designed Sherpa’s features around a decade of research into both mechanical trading systems and longer term fundamental stock selection strategies. He presents these techniques at his Opening Bell full day seminars and at weekly short courses held around Australia.

  8. What does the future hold?
Everything we know is important for traders and investors is available in the current version. We have not held back anything for future versions. At the time of writing, nothing has been tabled to be included in a future version. That’s good because you know that your version contains everything you will ever need. Of course, if technology changes and new options become available, we will be including them in an upgraded version of the software, to make sure you continue to have all the tools you need in a single convenient package.

There are self-professed experts who believe they have come up with another magic indicator that works better than any other. As a former market strategist and technical analysts for one of the world’s largest financial institutions, Roger Montgomery has tested the effectiveness of many if not most of the indicators that are available. He is even asked by the developers of other software to test the profitability of their systems and indicators and unique combinations. There is no point in placing every indicator on the software simply because it would take up more valuable space on your PC. Perhaps even more importantly however, many new indicators do exactly the same job or perform the same task as five or ten other indicators that were developed before them. If it’s new and works better then we may include it at a future date. But just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s better and so it might not necessarily be included.
